LOOK WHAT’S NEW IN DESLOGE

Here are some close-up views of the brand new Desloge Waterworks water storage tank that is located at the Highways 67 & 8 interchange.  The 124 foot, 650 thousand gallon tank will soon be full of water, but below you can even see an interior view of the tank before the filling process begins.

The Desloge Public Library renovation is progressing nicely, with all of the preliminary demolition completed, and a lot of the interior work done as well.  Views here include portions of the old “city hall” that will now be part of a large reading area, display cases, and public internet access.

Cantwell Street and Stormwater Improvements

The Cantwell Neighborhood is starting to see the beginning of significant street and stormwater improvements to include the complete reconstruction of portions of Cedar Street and Evergreen Street located in the Cantwell Neighborhood as well as portions of Cantwell Lane, Harry Jr. Street and Vandervoot Street located between Cedar Street and Evergreen Street.  Street improvements will include a new base and asphalt surface, concrete curbs and necessary storm drains.

“We made a pledge to the voters of Desloge when asking them to consider a special stormwater sales tax.  That pledge was to provide street curbing, close the ditches and pipe the stormwater underground,” Mayor David Kater explained.  “It all starts with this project.”

Unnerstall Contracting of Pacific, Missouri was awarded the $653,320 contract for the work to be preformed, with a completion date of December 12, 2007.  The project will be financed from a combination of sources to include the city’s Stormwater Fund and Transportation Fund.

During the construction phase, the city asks for resident’s patience as the outcome will certainly be worth any inconvenience during the interim.

Mineral Area College

Mineral Area College (MAC) is open to all high school graduates and non-graduates who are 16 years or older.  MAC maintains an open door policy, which provides opportunities for higher education to everyone who can benefit from its courses and programs.

Oh my! It’s O’Reilly!

Welcome the newest business to call Desloge home!  O’Reilly Auto Parts recently opened their new store at 1129 N. Desloge Drive, their phone number is 431-0943.  O’Reilly is committed to growth, opening 175 stores in 2006 and will open 190 this year.  During the Grand Opening celebration the store presented a $200 check to the East Missouri Action Agency. The store manager is Dwain McClure, stop by and welcome them to Desloge.

Desloge prevails in court rulings

Following hearings in November of 2006 and February 2007, Associate Circuit Judge Raymond M. Weber handed down his ruling July 10th, denying the City of Park Hills’ request to block ordinances that require Desloge residents to get water from the Desloge Waterworks System.  Additionally, the court ruled in favor of Desloge’s counterclaim that asked for specific declarations that the ordinances are valid, effective, and enforceable acts.  Specifically, the judgment declares the City of Desloge’s ordinances are, “valid, effective and enforceable legislative acts of Desloge and that Desloge may require it’s citizens to connect to it’s waterworks system upon completion of the construction of same and commencement of operations”. Desloge remains steadfast in the fact that it has the right to form its own municipal waterworks system and to require residents to sign up for the new system, Mayor David Kater said, “I feel the constituents of Desloge have prevailed in their pursuit of moving forward with getting the new water system done”.  Prior to the ruling, a clause in the dissolved standstill agreement between the two communities required Desloge to return the already completed applications if the court ruled in Park Hills' favor, however, with the recent decision, that will not take place, and residents that have completed and returned their Desloge Waterworks contracts do not have to complete and return a second one.  With the legal delay now passed, residents of Desloge are strongly encouraged to complete and return their Desloge Waterworks contracts, copies of which can be obtained at Desloge City Hall.

From the desk of the Mayor

It’s been a busy and exciting time in our city since the last issue of the Desloge

Sun. Since our previous visit we have accomplished much and made significant

strides in other areas. First, I want to say welcome aboard to several new employees.  There

are a few new faces at city hall starting with a new Deputy Court Clerk, her name is Shylah

Worley.  Bryan “Bo” Cato is our new Building Inspector and you may already

know Greg Camp, but now you will know him as our new City Administrator.  All

will be great assets to Desloge and I’m looking forward to working with each for

years to come.  Secondly, I would like to thank the Desloge Public Works Department for their

hard work and long hours during the winter storm clean up.  On the same note, to

the residents of Desloge that helped their neighbors, thank you.  I know from

personal experience, my family spent four days without electricity, the people of

Desloge are always willing to give of themselves to help others.  We are blessed to

live in a great city.  If the heat is getting to you, head on down to the city pool to see Pete and

the gang.  The pool is looking great and the lifeguards are doing a fine job.  We get

compliments every season from people from other cities about how well our pool

runs, how clean it is and how nice the staff is. Finally, don’t forget to go by and check out

some of the new business that have chosen Desloge as a great place to do business.  A lot of

good things are happening here. I hope you find the Desloge Sun a helpful publication.  The

city has a website with all sorts of helpful information as well at www.desloge.com.

Sincerely,

David Kater

Mayor, City of Desloge

Hot Fun in the Summertime!

The City of Desloge offers many wonderful outdoor recreational opportunities for everyone!  Desloge City Park is one of the finer municipal parks in St. Francois County, located at Parkside and Walnut Streets, next to Desloge Elementary.  From a refreshing splash in the city pool, an exciting round of tennis, watching the kids play on one of several playgrounds, or just relaxing in the shade of the gazebo or one of the pavilions, there’s something for the whole family.

The crystal clear and cool water of the city pool.  The bath house offers shower and changing facilities and has refreshments for sale.

The city tennis courts offer two regulation play areas in addition to a practice backboard.

Across from the city pool is one of several children playground areas.  Climbers, slides, swings and more, the play areas even feature a classic mining train.

The beautiful city gazebo is a popular place for weddings and family get-togethers.  The city park features several pavilions, of various size, for all sorts of gatherings.
